Gr.11 Kylie Hur - “Learning That Matters” 11학년  Kylie Hur의 의미 있는 배움

As educators we get the opportunity to work with students and mentor them every single day. Sometimes we see the direct result of our impact on their lives, often times not. But when we do, there’s not a prouder moment. This is one of them. When I arrived at GSIS in 2009, Kylie was a little 3rd grader whom I noticed as a pretty good soccer player. As the high school girls’ coach, I watched her keenly develop until I had the chance to coach her in 6th grade. In the years that followed I’ve gotten to know Kylie far beyond a soccer player, one of the privileges we gain as coaches, I think. I have essentially watched her grow into a mature, caring, intelligent young lady who strives for balance in an academically demanding society. Nowhere was her disposition more evident than in her work last year with her MYP Personal Project where she composed a song and video to commemorate the 2014 Sewol Ferry disaster in South Korea. It’s not because I’m the MYP Coordinator. It’s not because I’m the assistant principal. It’s because I’m an educator who is continually learning alongside my students, and this… what words can describe how proud I am of Kylie? It’s not celebrating a program, but the educators and parents that have worked with her to bring her to this moment where she is able to be proud of herself. Here’s her song and narrative, followed by an interview she did with a national Korean newspaper. Thank you, Kylie, for being a great role model to others and sharing your passion with us. This is the learning that matters, and we’re so proud of you.

Darryl Harding

Secondary School Assistant Principal & MYP Coordinator

My name is Kylie Hur, and it’s my 11th year at GSIS. As one of the processes of completing my Middle Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate, I had to complete a project in grade 10. Our class basically had to do a project related to our personal interest, something that we would like to gain knowledge and experiences on. For my personal project, I decided to compose a song about the Sewol Ferry incident. I chose this as my personal project because I wanted to remind people about this tragic incident and make them feel sympathetic towards the victims. This was a very challenging project and took me a lot of time and effort to complete this project; however, it was worth it after I completed my song, “The Yellow Ribbon“. After a few months since I completed my personal project, my grandfather, who’s an illustrator, decided to use the lyrics of my song to create a book. This collaboration I did with my grandfather was very meaningful to me and will always remind me of my 10th grade year. I think that the personal project allowed me to make great memories and experiences that I would never forget, and most importantly extended my path as a musician.

Testimonials

Mina Sung

Samantha Kim

Lynnie Vandermeer

  • Through the IB curriculum, the well-rounded thematic approach to assignments that came with set rubrics and criteria, along with strict deadlines, really prompted and scaffolded my children to manage time wisely. I also greatly appreciated the teachers’ dedication in assisting my children to be successful. When my children first began international school, my children struggled with meeting deadlines and even understanding the assignments. However, the teachers always reached out and communicated rationales with thorough explanations behind such result. Through this process, I was able to see the step-by-step approach to learning instead of the obsession over grades. Such an approach in learning was the best fit for my children and for that, I am truly thankful. » Grace Kim, Parent

  • My daughter has attend GSIS since kindergarten and is currently in grade 6. The best part of GSIS is the teachers here take care of their students with a Christian spirit because of the mission of the school. GSIS also offers the IB program, a high quality international education program which is recognized by leading colleges & universities. I would love to see my daughter graduate GSIS! » Mina Sung, Parent

  • It is the outstanding community that has shaped me into who I am today : outstanding morals, principled rapport and a genuine love for learning have all imbued a sense of maturity within me. » Victor Jeong, Class of 2016

  • GSIS faculty and staff served as true role models through their words and actions which helped me shape a better perspective towards the world and to seek Christ in my life. » Maim Cho, Alumnus Class of 2011

Grace Kim

  • We get to learn with iPads and have fun! I love my teachers! » Emily Minju Hong, Grade 6

Tracy Kim

  • One of my best academic experiences here at GSIS was in my HL Biology class. My teacher has helped me discover a lot about the subject and has definitely prepared me for college. She also shared many academic writings in the field of bioengineering and medicine, and through them, I've been influenced to study medicine. » Samantha Kim, Alumna Class of 2015

  • When I come back to GSIS, all the memories of the day to day interactions that I had with my friends and teachers come back to me. It wasn’t until I was in college that I realized how great the environment is here. It’s something that I took for granted while I was a student here but really appreciate now that I am in college. » Tracy Kim, Alumna Class of 2011

  • GSIS has brought specialists and classroom teachers together to help educate the whole child. It's a partnership with the parents enabling our students to grow up to be confident, well balanced kids, who will courageously try new things. We collaborate with each other for the benefit of each individual child, so that kids will be comfortable to explore new ways, new ideas, and new technologies in this international world. Sharing God's love is a big part of why I'm here. Students are also nourished spiritually and get to see Christ's love in action. » Lynnie Vandermeer, Faculty

  • The teachers at GSIS are all very nice and it's easy to talk to them, which makes it fun. I like the clubs we have at this school too. Last fall I participated in the soccer program and played against other international schools at jamborees. » Lucas Lee, Grade 11
